Pros1-12" is the perfect size for a portable
2-Thin Profile
3-Solid State HD - fast and silent
4-Price - Ebay, refurbished (order was cancelled, new and never used) less than $1200. I built the same laptop on Dell's website and it would have cost about $2000, with a significant discount.
5-Supplied drivers, OS, PowerDVD, Vista and XP, diagnostics and utilities
6-Handwriting recognition is incredible
7-Biometrics - easy to enroll fingerprints and use for logging in instead of password
8-The screen is brilliant and clear (haven't used it outside yet)
9-I love the small power adapter. Fits great in my slipcase.
10-Quality of construction - I know there are a lot of negative reviews about this laptop's quality, but everything about it to me shows careful thought by the Dell engineers and quality materials.
11-I like how a portion of the stylus is cubed so that it doesn't roll around. The optional tether is sturdy and unobtrusive. Fits easily and firmly into its cradle. Different tip styles are also provided, though the one provided works fine for me.
12-Comes quickly out of sleep mode
13-Built-in speaker has a clean, clear, robust sound (as much as you could expect from a laptop).
14-The tablet buttons are convenient and provide quick access to some handy tools
15-I really like the feel of the keyboard. I don't feel cramped at all, inspite of the small size of the laptop. In fact, it feels very natural.
16-The little blue mouse stick grips my finger well and I've had no trouble with hitting keys. Sometimes I do hit the space bar instead of the left-mouse button, but my thumb should adjust to that.
17-All of the different types of ports give me confidence that my current needs and future needs will be met with this laptop (at least for a few years)
18-I'm a first time tablet user and really like the input-with-a-pen ability and all the other tablet options.
Cons1 - The Solid State HD, though fast and quiet, is also only 64 GB and Windows Vista alone filled about half of it.
2 - It does get warm, but not hot like I've experienced with other laptops. I've worked on it for three hours straight holding it in tablet mode and was very comfortable. And if I rotate the screen and the laptop itself, the nonhinge side is a little cooler to the touch.
3-It can be pricey, but again, if a person is patient and shops around, deals are out there.
Review:XT Quality. Several of the reviews I read on this website really surprise me, now that I own an XT. I've been shopping for a tablet for several months and had narrowed it down to this one or the Lenovo X61. I was hesitant about purchasing this tablet because of the reviews on this site, but it seemed to be so feature rich that I took the plunge and have no regrets.
I would suggest that the XT is a business laptop and not meant to be industrial strength like a Toughbook. I wouldn't want to be carrying this with me on a job site or driving down a dusty road in the desert with the doors off. But for students and business professionals, I think it is fabulous.
This tablet came fully loaded, and maybe that is another reason I have had such a great experience with it so far. It has a Solid State HD, 3 GB ram (maxed out), external DVD RW, bluetooth and wireless internet enabled, disks for both Vista and XP Tablet, biometrics enabled (fingerprint reader), and then everything else which comes with the laptop.
It came with XP pre-installed and I wanted Vista because it's tablet features are much more developed than XP's. So I did a clean install of Vista, then had to reinstall the drivers using the provided utility disk. I did have to read a little bit to find which driver to use for the tablet buttons but it only took a minute to figure it out. Again, my main complaint is that Vista, though I really like the OS so far, is a definite memory hog. But some careful file management is worth the speed and quiet execution that the hard drive delivers. Rarely am I waiting on the computer to complete its task. It is ready when I am and I really like that.
All the features mentioned in thorough product reviews online of the XT are great and I'm not going to go into them. Just don't get too downhearted by some of the reviews on this website. Maybe I'll be singing a different tune in a year or so, but right now it's zippity doo da for me. This is a great tablet. Enjoy your shopping.
