Review:Purchased this system just prior to the release of Windows Vista. Used XP on it for a while ... and subsequently did a clean install of Vista Ultimate. Some applications had a notable increase in speed including Adobe applications. The only thing I have otherwise done to the system is upgrade the storage adding two 1TB SATA drives to the system (I initially configured it with two SAS disks). Although this system is huge compared to other workstations it runs very quiet and not as much heat dissipation as compared to the system it replaced. All in all, probably the best workstation class system I have owned - worth the investment.

ProsPlenty of computing horsepower.
The dual 24" LCD monitors are awesome
Lots of USB ports easily accessible on front and sides of monitors and F/B of system case.
Memory card readers integrated in the side of the monitors.
Firewire ports on front and back of case.
Very quiet operation.
Case and inside mountings are first class and easy to access for upgrades, cleaning, etc.
ConsThe only cons I have are related to Windows Vista Ultimate.
Windows Vista ultimate developed some problems recognizing my USB flash drive. These have been resolved with Vista updates. Some of my legacy software and my SCSI scanner did not work with Vista, necessitating upgrades (oh darn!)

Review:My last workstation was a Dell Precision 420 which I ran for 8 years, adding only an additional hard drive and RAM. I expect this 690 to last at least as long. The Precision product line is very reliable, powerful and quiet.

Pros2 Dual Core 3.00 Zeons
4 Gigs
Dual Graphics cards with 3 x 19" UltraSharp's and a 22" Widescreen UltraSharp attached for quad monitor setup
Nice and fast
ConsSome software doesn't support multiprocessors but thats not Dell's fault

Review:The Quad monitor setup is fantastic, seperate screens for different applications or different panels of the same application, eg Flash / Illustrator on different screens. Very effcient workflow

ProsModular, easy to upgrade, extremley fast depending on your configuration and what you use it for.
ConsLimited bios options - would be nice to try to overclock but honestly for business use that I have stability is much more important. Very large.

Review:The user complaining about less than 4GB of ram available in XP is not too bright. How is it Dell's fault that he chose to use a 32 bit operating system incapable of fully utilizing 4GB of ram? If you need above 3GB or so of ram then you need to use a 64 bit operating system. I run the x64 version of Vista on this one with 16GB of ram and it works great.
