Review:I have already recommended Dell to a friend for a computer purchase. That being said, I also told him to watch closely as he builds his system. Dell likes to add unncessary items. The site indicated that I did not select a sound card. However, the laptop came with onboard sound, so I purchased a plugin PCMCI sound card unnecessarily. I also selected to not have Lojack and no online backup. Laptop came with both.
The 1545 is a great little laptop otherwise. It came with Windows 7, which SO FAR, is running really well after one month.
Finally, read the independent reviews of Microsoft's Security Essentials Suite. No need for a resource hogging add-on anti-virus program.

Title: Great Improvement Date: 20 November 2009
Product Uses: school work, surfing, watching movies, photos, playing music

Review:I would have taken almost anything over our bogged-down, 8 year old desktop. The Inspiron 1545 meets our needs and is a great improvement. We got the Core 2 Duo T6500, 4 GB RAM, 6-cell battery, and WLED display. Battery lasts much longer than the 2 year old Inspiron I use for work, The screen is clear and bright, and Windows 7 runs great on it. I thought I was removing some software bloat when it first arrived, but then DVDs wouldn't play on it. So I re-installed Windows (piece of cake!), and it runs fine again. Internet was easy to set up. Touch pad works fine by itself. Clean look (no extra buttons or ports to clutter things), nice to have the webcam for school. Reasonable price.

The keys sometimes squeak and sound cheap when typing. When we're on the internet, occasionally we must hit something on the keyboard that simultaneously causes the browsing history to pop up and the cursor to move to a different part of the window and screw up what we're typing. It only has 3 USB ports, which are quickly taken up by a mouse, cooling stand, and external hard drive. Printer? Unplug something first.

Otherwise, we're happy with it.
